Facebook and Free Traffic

Continuing on from last week's Success Tip; we were discussing how to get more free traffic by using the fast exploding areas of social networking. The Grand Daddy of them all, at present, is Facebook.

I also pointed out that the #1 mistake, and almost 99% of marketers are making it, is that if you use Facebook to just directly promote and sell your products and services, you will probably fail.

The key to social media is that it's really a two step process. The first step is to build strong relationships with your customers, allow more people to find you, build your brand and provide really great content which you can syndicate across the internet, then, and only then by default, you will drive traffic to your website.

With that in mind, there are many ways, techniques and tricks to doing this. Once you've created your account, you'll see there are two main areas on Facebook, the first being your Profile.

The first step in laying your foundation is simply, to fill out a complete profile of yourself on Facebook. This sounds simple, but it's important for several reasons...

For starters, be sure to put up a nice clear photo of yourself smiling. Photos are extremely important and fascinating to humans and have been proven to get at least double the clicks and attention than not having a photo of yourself (ladies, that's a tip for your online dating profile!). People want to know what you look like and who they are dealing with.

Psychologists have also proven that a smiling face will instantly create more rapport and likeability with your audience, which increases your ‘Influence Quotient’ (I just invented that term) with them.

Don't under any circumstances put up photos of you with three of your friends, as your profile photo. This will confuse people and leave them guessing which one you are! So don’t do it.

Next and most importantly, is to put in your website URL. Straight away, if people are interested in you or what you have to say, they can choose to find out more about you by going to your website. Hey presto... Instant traffic! Of course you'll need a strategy on your website to convert your new traffic, which is another topic for another time, but essentially for free, you’ve generated traffic, which is what you want!

From there, under ‘Edit My Profile’ you’ll want to fill out as much as you can under the content boxes, Basic Information, Personal Information, Contact Information and Education and Work. Of course you’ll want to be aware of security and control the level of access people have to this information, as well as what you tell them about yourself.

Having said that, remember your primary goal of social networking in the first place...  is to build relationships, allow more people to find you and to be more relatable. It is here you will strengthen the bonds with your friends online. They’re probably learning many things about you they didn’t know and this increases trust and connection.

Now that you’ve created your profile, you’ll want to start inviting all your friends to connect with you and build a large group of like minded contacts, which we’ll discuss next time.
